Karamoja Youth Livelihood Initiative (KYLI) was established in 2021 as a CBO in Moroto District with an overall goal of promoting and nurturing youth to become future leaders and entrepreneurs with integrity, creativity, and hard work. Without the necessary education and training, youth in Karamoja lack the resources to start their own businesses and create work for themselves and their communities.

To transform lives and create lasting societal change, KYLI believes in a long-term commitment to empower youth, not only to find and create jobs but also to claim space as active citizens fighting for systemic changes in a just sustainable world.

KYLI operates in the districts of Moroto and Napak, with plans to extend its activities to Amudat, Nakapiripirit, Nabilatuk, and other Districts in Karamoja sub-region.

KYLI is governed through a Board, which is headed by a Chairperson, deputized by a vice chairperson, Secretary and a Treasurer who is the focal contact person for the organization. The board has five other members who handle procurement processes of the CBO.

KYLI also has a secretariat whose duties include the operationalization of policies and guidelines developed by the Board. The secretariat is headed by the Executive Director, assisted by programme, finance, and administration staff.

KYLI was formed to achieve several objectives including preserving the environment through environmentally smart agricultural practices, promoting creativity in technology, imparting virtues in youth for community service, promoting value addition to agricultural products, promoting Karamoja culture, fighting female genital mutilation, and sensitizing communities on disaster risk reduction approaches.

To be nationally recognized as an association of excellence in empowering youth leaders and entrepreneurs with life skills such as leadership, innovation, creativity, communication skills, and business skills.

Research

Our research initiative is committed to identifying and addressing the critical issues affecting Karamoja, including poverty, insecurity, school dropouts, and cattle diseases. We focus on understanding these challenges in depth to develop effective, tech-led solutions.

Climate

Plant a Tree - Green Karamoja Campaign: A Million Trees for a Greener Tomorrow Our commitment to environmental sustainability is embodied in the "Plant a Tree - Green Karamoja" campaign. With a vision to plant over 1 million trees by 2035, we strive to make Karamoja a greener and healthier place to live. Contribute to regreening Karamoja and creating a sustainable future by supporting our tree planting initiatives.

Youth Empowerment Project:

Our Youth Empowerment Project, also known as Mindset Uplift, is dedicated to transforming lives through online mentorship sessions. We leverage platforms such as X and Zoom to connect youth with entrepreneurs and leaders from around the world, offering valuable insights and guidance on skills development and personal growth.
